Your Excellency,
Fathi el-Jahmi, a trained civil engineer, has been
detained since March 2004 after he criticized Libyan leader Mu’ammar al-Gaddafi
and called for political reforms during interviews with international media.
Since July 2007, Fathi el-Jahmi has been kept in
custody at the Tripoli Medical Centre. He suffers from heart disease, high
blood pressure and diabetes. Security officers refuse to return his passport
and keep his family under close surveillance.
I am deeply concerned about Fathi el-Jahmi and call
for his immediate and unconditional release.
I also urge the authorities to return his passport and
ensure that he can seek medical treatment of his own choice in Libya or abroad.
Yours sincerely
