Sr. Raúl Castro Ruz
La Habana

Cuba

Your Excellency

Léster González Pentón is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence. He has worked for two human rights organizations, Reason, Truth and Freedom Human Rights Movement (Movimiento pro Derechos Humanos Razón, Verdad y Libertad) and the Cuban Confederation of Democratic Workers (Confederación de Trabajadores Democráticos de Cuba).

In 2001, and again in 2002, he was subjected to harassment by police officers. On 18 March 2003, he was arrested and accused of having contact with “subversive organizations” and of disrespecting the head of state. He was convicted on 7 April 2003, under Article 91 of the Penal Code, for “acts against the independence or territorial integrity of the state.” According to the text of his sentence, his crime included providing radio stations in Miami, in the USA, with “misleading” information on the human rights situation in Cuba.

Amnesty International considers Léster González Pentón to be a prisoner of conscience, imprisoned solely for exercising his freedom of expression and association.

I call for Léster González Pentón to be released immediately and unconditionally.

Sincerely,
